Constipation

Constipation is a common health problem characterised by difficult or infrequent bowel movements. It can be caused by several factors, such as poor diet, lack of physical activity, dehydration, stress, some medications or medical conditions.

Symptoms of constipation may include:

Abdominal pain or discomfort
Bloating
Feeling of heaviness in the stomach
Feeling of fullness or fullness in the rectum
Infrequent and difficult stools
Feeling of incomplete evacuation after defecation

Treatment of constipation may include lifestyle changes such as increasing dietary fibre intake, adequate hydration, regular exercise and avoiding stress. Laxatives or other medications may also sometimes be necessary, but these should only be taken on the advice and under the supervision of a doctor.

If constipation becomes persistent or is accompanied by other worrying symptoms, it is important to consult a doctor to rule out other conditions and receive appropriate treatment.
