Anal fissure
Anal fissure
An anal fissure is a small crack or tear in the lining of the anal canal or the edge of the anus. This can cause intense pain, especially during and after defecation, as well as minor bleeding. Anal fissures are often the result of passing large or hard faeces, but can also be caused by other conditions such as chronic constipation, diarrhoea or inflammation around the anus.
Initial treatment for anal fissures may include measures to reduce pain and promote healing, such as eating fibre, adequate hydration, warm sitz baths and the use of topical creams or ointments to relax the muscles and reduce inflammation. In some cases, more advanced medical interventions, such as botulinum toxin injections or surgery, may be needed to promote healing and prevent recurrence.
It’s important to see a doctor if you experience symptoms of an anal fissure to receive an accurate diagnosis and an appropriate treatment plan. Ignoring anal fissure can lead to complications and worsening symptoms.
